A Village Made for Slowing Down
Chatton isn’t a place you rush through. It’s a small, friendly village tucked into the Northumberland countryside, and once you’ve dropped your bags at The Old Post Office, you’ll find most of what you need is already within walking distance. Start, unsurprisingly, with the pub. It’s two minutes from the front door, and after a day outdoors there’s nowhere better for a pint by the fire and a proper plate of food.
Walking Straight from the Door
Northumberland is walking country, and Chatton sits right in the middle of it. Quiet lanes and footpaths lead out into rolling farmland and moorland edges, with Chillingham and its wild cattle just a short walk or drive away. If you’ve brought the dog, this is exactly the kind of scenery it was made for, mile after mile of open countryside with barely another soul around.
Chillingham Castle and Wild Cattle Park
A few minutes from Chatton, Chillingham Castle is one of Northumberland’s most atmospheric historic sites, complete with dungeons, gardens and genuinely eerie ghost tours if that’s your thing. Next door, the Chillingham Wild Cattle Park is home to Britain’s oldest and rarest herd of cattle, roaming exactly as they have for centuries. It’s an easy, low-key half-day out that doesn’t require much planning.
Alnwick, Just Down the Road
For a bigger day out, Alnwick is around 20 minutes away by car. Alnwick Castle (familiar to any Harry Potter fans) and the Alnwick Garden’s dramatic Grand Cascade are both well worth the trip, and the town itself has a good spread of independent shops and cafes, including Barter Books, one of the largest second-hand bookshops in the country, for a rainy afternoon.
The Coast Isn’t Far Either
What makes Chatton such a good base is how close it sits to the Northumberland coast, with Bamburgh, Seahouses and Holy Island all within easy reach for a day trip. You can genuinely do castles, cattle, coastline and a cosy pub dinner all within a few miles of the cottage.
