Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle is the kind of view that stops you mid-sentence. Perched on a volcanic outcrop above one of England’s finest beaches, it’s been standing guard over this stretch of coast for well over a thousand years, and it still looks the part from every angle, whether you’re approaching along the sand or up the village high street. Inside, you’ll find state rooms, armour, a working King’s Hall and a genuinely impressive Aviation Artefacts Museum, enough to fill a couple of unhurried hours. Save time to walk the beach itself. It’s vast, quiet even in summer, and the castle looms over the whole thing, making for one of the most photographed views in the North East for good reason. Bring a flask, let the dog off the lead once you’re clear of the dunes, and don’t rush it. Late morning is the sweet spot, in early enough to beat the coach parties, out in time for lunch in the village. Autumn and spring visits mean quieter grounds and a good chance of having long stretches of beach entirely to yourselves. It’s an easy, brilliant day trip from The Old Post Office, and honestly the sort of place that’s worth building a whole day in Chatton around.
