Barter Books, Alnwick

If the Northumberland weather turns, Barter Books is exactly where you want to be. Housed in Alnwick’s beautifully restored Victorian railway station, it’s one of the largest secondhand bookshops in the country, and genuinely somewhere you can lose an entire afternoon without noticing. Roaring open fires, a model railway running along the top of the shelves, and miles of books across every genre imaginable make it feel more like an experience than an errand. It’s also where the original “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster was rediscovered, now framed by the till, which tends to raise a smile from first-time visitors. There’s a café on site serving proper coffee and cake, so you can settle in properly rather than just browse and leave. It’s an easy one to pair with a wander round Alnwick itself, the castle and gardens are a short walk away if the weather clears, or simply a lazy few hours if it doesn’t. Whatever the forecast does on your Chatton stay, this is the reliable, cosy fallback that never actually feels like a fallback.
