Chillingham Castle & Wild Cattle Park

Chillingham is about as local as a proper day out gets, just a short hop from The Old Post Office and unlike anything else nearby. The castle itself has a reputation as one of the most atmospheric in England, dungeons, torture chamber and all, and the guided tours don’t shy away from the darker chapters of its history. It’s not a polished, roped-off sort of visit; you get right up close to seven centuries of the real thing. Next door, the Chillingham Wild Cattle Park is home to Britain’s oldest and rarest herd of cattle, wild, unmanaged, and genetically unchanged for around 800 years. A warden-led walk through the park to see them grazing exactly as their ancestors did is a proper Northumberland one-off, not something you’ll find anywhere else in the country. Between the two, give yourself at least half a day. The castle grounds and gardens are lovely for a wander afterwards, and there’s a tea room on site if you want to make a full, unrushed morning of it. It’s a brilliant one to save for a day when you don’t fancy driving far, this is about as close to home as a proper adventure gets.
