Rural, But Not Hard to Reach
Chatton feels wonderfully tucked away, but getting to The Old Post Office is more straightforward than the village’s quiet, out-of-the-way character might suggest. Here’s what to know before you set off.
By Car
Driving is by far the easiest way to reach Chatton, and honestly the best way to make the most of Northumberland once you’re here. The village sits just off the A1, roughly 20 minutes from Alnwick and around 40 minutes from Newcastle, depending on traffic. If you’re coming from further afield, Edinburgh is around two hours north and York around two and a half hours south, both easy motorway routes that feed onto the A1. Once you’re off the main road, the last stretch is quiet countryside lanes, so take it slow, especially after dark.
By Train
The nearest mainline station is Berwick-upon-Tweed or Alnmouth, both on the East Coast main line with direct services from London, Edinburgh and Newcastle. From either station, you’ll need a taxi or pre-arranged transfer to reach Chatton, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by road. It’s worth booking a taxi in advance for weekend arrivals, as availability in rural Northumberland can be limited at short notice.
By Air
Newcastle International Airport is the closest option, around 45 minutes’ drive from Chatton, with good connections across the UK and Europe. Edinburgh Airport is a further alternative if you’re travelling from further afield, at around two hours’ drive.
Once You’re Here
A car really is the best way to explore once you’ve arrived. The coast, Alnwick, Chillingham and the wider countryside are all a short drive away, and public transport in this part of Northumberland is limited outside the main towns. If you’re travelling car-free, it’s worth planning your days around what’s realistically walkable from Chatton itself, the local pub included, plus the occasional taxi for anything further afield.
